Acuna made history in Argentina by being the
first to have a pro fight in this country
.October 21, 2005 - in
Broadbeach, Queensland District, Australia
Sharon Anyos, 123½, won by a ten-round unanimous
decision over Marcela Eliana Acuna, 124¾, for
the WBC vacant Featherweight title. Final judges scores were
96-94, 96-94, and 97-93. "I'm here to knock
her out," says Acuña, According to an interview in this morning's
Olé, Marcela Acuña sees herself 'virtually obliged' to win tonight's
fight with Sharon Anyos for the WBC Featherweight title by knockout:
"Otherwise, you know how it goes when you're fighting abroad: you
think you're miles ahead and get a nasty surprise at the end when
they read the scorecards." The Argentinian knows the 6,000-strong
crowd will do everything in its power to lift the local girl (whom
Olé describes, somewhat unkindly, as a ´Barbie doll´) but says that
won't affect her: "I hope she'll come out and attack me. That'll
suit me just fine. I'm here to knock her out. I want to get this
over fast and go home - taking the belt with me. I haven't seen my
two children for ages." Acuna DID not knock out Anyos,
and Anyos is now the new WBC Champion. by Ewan Whyte (Pre-fight

Acuna vs. Padilla - Part I
Acuna vs. Padilla - Part II
Detailed editorial by Ewan Whyte
Marcela Acuna stopped Daisy Padilla in the first round. This
fight was for the WIBA Junior Bantamweight world title fight.
Evidently stung by criticism in December that she had taken five and a half
rounds to finish Damaris Pinock Ortega, when she had had the
Panamanian at her mercy in the first, Marcela Acuña wasted no time or pity
on the lanky Colombian Daisy (‘Demolition’) Padilla in her first
title defence. Sensing an initial hesitation on the part of her opponent,
the champion moved swiftly across the ring (‘like a tigress with the cage
door open’ as Olé put it) catching the Padilla almost immediately with a
hard right to the cheek that had her reeling and following up with a furious
assault that forced referee Raúl Ilvento to stop the fight after only 43
seconds. Padilla, who was claiming a record of 14-1-0 with 14 KOs and had
boasted she would ´make the Tigress dance to my tune´, lacked the experience
(as ex-world champion Ricardo Cardona in her corner later admitted)
to cling to Acuña when she was hurt, to give her head time to clear.
Commented Acuña: “Even dazed, Padilla managed to throw a few punches and I
could feel she hits hard, but I kept beating her to the punch and she could
do nothing.” At midnight, Padilla was admitted to hospital as a
precautionary measure, though she was perfectly lucid. Report by Ewan

History Repeats Itself..
By TL Fox 9/28/98
The
fight between Lucia Rijker and
Marcela Acuña had a very familiar ring to it, and I
not talking about a boxing ring. Just when I thought that women boxing was making
headway---in this fight and Acuna's last fight with Martin, I see some
similarities that emulate the the 70s.
When
have you seen a top male contender, pound for pound "one of the best", fight an opponent, that has never had one professional boxing
match? But then see the "green horn" lose that bout, and immediately
get matched up with an opponent that is known to be the "best of the best"?
Well, thats what happened in womens boxing when Marcela
Acuna, first fighting her
debut against Christy Martin and losing that bout.
Then being thrown into the fire pit with her next opponent, Lucia
Rijker, that most people would agree
would wipe Martin off the canvas. She was KO'd in the 5th round.
Acuna didnt have a chance.
Who is the
"great one" that decided to take such a young and talented fighter as
Acuna, and
stack the odds against her early in her career. People say, well, Acuna
was a kickboxer who was 17-1-1 in Argentina. Well, wake up folks, this
is boxing. Boxing with the very best competition that the sport has to
offer. FULL STORY FOR
