  Misc Info:

September 10, 2004 at the Tropicana Casino and Resort, in Atlanta City, New Jersey
Jacqui Frazier-Lyde, 179, won a ten-rounder over Mary Ann Almager, 183, in a heavyweight title fight. According to news sources, Almager knocked Frazier-Lyde to the canvas twice, but lost the bout by 97-92, 96-92, and 95-93.  Report by Jack Crider:   The Tropicana Hotel and Casino played host to one of the most exciting Women’s Boxing Championship Bouts in many years. The Event Title “Sister Smoke Returns” was a well matched battle between two of the best female boxers in the world. From the opening bell it was evident that neither of the two women was going to give up much ground.  Round one saw both women see sawing back in forth trading heavy leather with Frazier-Lyde narrowly winning the first round of an exciting bout. The second round began with both ladies again trading heavy shots, trying to take out each other. To the crowd’s amazment, Almager landed a big right hand, catching Frazier-Lyde off balance and sending “Sister Smoke” to one knee. After looking surprised and dazed, Frazier-Lyde shook off the cob webs and survived the second round. In round three Frazier-Lyde seemed to gain her composure and clearly landed the heavier blows pounding Almager to the body and sending her against the ropes. The fourth round Frazier-Lyde started looking much like the third round with Frazier-Lyde again going to the body of Almager and making her cover up. Almager in this round did have some moments, but the heavier damage went to Lyde. The fifth round saw both Almager and Frazier-Lyde going back and forth each having their moments, but the body attack by Frazier-Lyde again seemed to win the round. Round six was exciting but with no real fanfare, again Frazier-Lyde doing more to impress than Almager. In round seven Almager came out looking to again try to take out Frazier-Lyde, however Lyde used good defence and came on later in the round again with a good body attack which slowed down Almager. Almager came out in round eight again trying to land big shots on Frazier but again “Sister Smoke” used good defense and again clearly used better boxing skills to win the round. The ninth round was a recap of the eight round with Frazier-Lyde controlling the action with body shots, good defense and holding Almager at bay and easily winning the round.  In between rounds Almager’s corner screamed encouragement to her and instructed her to let it all hang out. The result was good because the motivation saw Almager get a controversial knock down half way into the round. As a result, Almager clearly won this tenth round. Frazier-Lyde on the other hand as well as many observers ringside, thought the knock down was more a push than actually a knock down. Referee Eddie Cotton to quite a few fans dismay ruled it a knock down.

August 22, 2003 -  Odessa, Texas
Middleweight Nikki Eplion, 162,  won an eight-round unanimous decision over Mary Ann Almager, 168, of Texas. Eplion improved her record to 10-0-2 (6KO), and Almager is now 14-7-0 ( KO).

February 14, 2003, Louisville, KY PHOTOS
On ESPN2 "Friday Night Fights" in Louisville, Kentucky, hometown of her father Muhammad Ali,  Laila 'She-Bee Stingin' Ali, 167,  defended her IBA Super-Middleweight title against World champion Mary Ann Almager, 168. Ali fought a flawless performance and just seems to keep getting better each and every time she steps into the ring.  Almager on the other hand appeared to be out of shape, and unprepared to take on a 10-rounder with the likes of Ali.  The fight ended in a fourth round stoppage, when Ali gave a devastating body shot to Almager, that left her (Almager) bent over until the ref called the fight to an end.  On the undercard, Fredia "The Cheetah" Gibbs fought a four-rounder against Kanicia "Queen Bee" Eley that ended in a unanimous decision for Gibbs. Gibbs was the quicker of the two, and control the tempo of the fight throughout the four rounds. Final judges scoring was 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37.

June 14, 2002 - Beaumont, Texas
Valerie "The Wolfe" Mahfood from Beaumont, won a six-round split decision over Mary Ann Almager, Texas. According to news sources, Mahfood was busier throughout the six rounds throwing more combinations. Final scoring by all three judges was 77-73, 78-72 (Mahfood), and 76-74 (Almager). This was a rematch for the two, when Mahfood had stopped Almager in their first meeting. Mahfood improved her record to 13-4-0 (7KO), and Almager is now 13-5-0 (9KO).

Background:
Mary Ann Almager, 5'9", SOUTHPAW,  was born in Seminole, Texas on December 5, 1968. She first boxed at age nine, following her two amateur boxer brothers to the gym. In high school athlete she ran cross-country and track, and played basketball and volleyball---although Softball was her favorite sport at the time. She began boxing professionally. She had her pro debut on February 5, 1993.  WBAN taped the Almager/Ann Wolfe fight which was not televised, but on ESPN2 card on 2/11/00. She won a world title at a milestone all-female card sanctioned by Barbara Buttrick's WIBF on April 20, 1995 at the Aladdin in Las Vegas. The fight was against Ireland's Dierdre Nelson.  Referee Halpern (The ref who killed himself in year 2000) was the ref.  Nelson looked in stunned disbelief when the fight was stopped. WBAN viewed the tape: Opinion--fight was stopped way too soon. WBAN contacted the Nevada Boxing Commission--They saw nothing wrong with the stoppage.   On November 2, 1996 at Tokyo Bay NK Hall in Japan, Mary Ann was stopped in the 9th round by Valerie Henin Weit, a French kickboxing star making her PRO DEBUT as a boxer. She had openly challenged Almager. Weit took Almager's WIBF Super-Welterweight title away from her.   Almager had some time off when she had to undergo arthroscopic surgery on her right knee in December 1997. Her weight went up to 190 lbs.   She had to loss a massive amount of weight to fight Lucia Rijker.  From losing that weight, her "electrolytes" were messed up and she was hospitalized.
