PRESS RELEASE -FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
11-17-03 -GOGARTY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT!!!!
The daughter of Doctors and the sister of education and business
leaders, Deirdre Gogarty has relinquished her Women’s International Boxing
Federation featherweight title and retired from the sport as a boxer.
Deirdre will continue to be actively involved in the training of young men
and women who box for The Ragin’ Cajun Amateur Boxing Club in Lafayette,
Louisiana. She will assist her long time manager and trainer Beau Williford
who is Head Coach of the club.
Deirdre became an overnight sensation (after 8 years of hard work)
when she boxed “The Coal Miners Daughter” Christy Martin on the under card
of the Mike Tyson v. Frank Bruno World Heavyweight Title bout at the MGM
Grand in Las Vegas on March 16, 1996. The bout, expected to be a blowout for
Martin, turned into the most exciting fight on the show and credited with
saving the entire fight card.
Called “The most lucrative broken nose in the
history of boxing.” by Ed Schuyler of the Associated Press. Deirdre who got
of the floor in the second round to break Martins nose in the same round,
fought bravely and with great skill for six rounds only to see Martin
awarded a controversial decision win. Sports Illustrated and the world media
rewarded Martin and Gogarty for their efforts. Nick Charles, of CNN Sports
at the time, said “Deirdre Gogarty is the most proficient female boxer I
have ever seen.” Showtime’s Bobby Czyz, the former 3-time world champion,
and a color commentator, along with Steve Albert for the bout, believed that
the worst that Gogarty should have received was a draw. After appearances on
several high profile TV shows (Deirdre sparred with Regis Philbin on the
Regis and Kathy Lee show) she dominated Bonnie Canino to win the undisputed
WIBF World Featherweight title.
In January of 1998 while preparing for a bout, Deirdre injured her right
shoulder in sparring. With the bout only five days away, being a true
champion Deirdre went ahead with the challenge anyway. After only two rounds
the pain in her shoulder was excruciating and she suffered limited use of
the arm for the remaining eight rounds. After consulting with an Orthopedic
Surgeon is was discovered that Deirdre had a torn rotator cuff!
The following year and a half was spent consulting with top specialists with
the aid of Dr. Richard Lucey of Pensacola, Florida. When it seemed only
surgery was the answer, Deirdre finally found relief from Dr. Michael
Cavanaugh of Lafayette, Louisiana, and attempted a comeback to the ring. The
following years became the most frustrating of Deirdre’s career as bout
after bout fell through, including seven exasperating attempts to defend her
World Featherweight Title. Postponements, cancellations, opponents pulling
out, promoter’s failure to provide funds, etc. prevented Deirdre from
fulfilling the remainder of her destiny and prompted her retirement from the
ring.
Deirdre works full-time as the Art Director for AAA Signs, Inc. one of the
largest sign companies in the Southwest United States. The innovative artist
also makes her own “shadow boxes” to commemorate the careers of so many
great boxers (see attached enclosure). She enjoys her evenings in the boxing
gym where she puts the same work ethic into coaching her young prospects as
she did her boxing career.
