RUMBLE IN THE RAVE/ MILWAUKEE
/ MARCH 22
Report/Photos by Bob Marovitz
WBAN Chicago Correspondent
On a night when U. Of Wisconsin and Marquette University were both playing
in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, about 300 spectators turned out to see
Former Pro Kick boxer Duke Roufas showcase the best female and male
Amateur Boxer's on an 8-bout mixed card on Saturday, March 22 in
Milwaukee, WI.
Headlining the Card was the 132 pound main eventer between WBAN March
Boxer of the Month, 2002 National Golden Glove Champion and USA Boxing #1
ranked Naquana Smalls versus USA Boxing #2 ranked Caroline Barry. Their
bout was expected to be the night's highlight and it was as you would
expect. The camaraderie between Caroline and Naquana was warm outside the
ring before their bout until they traded punches in the ring.. Barry
forced the action early on and backed Smalls against the ropes where she
had the upper hand, but Smalls took some punishment and came out swinging
effective shots and uppercuts against Barry to end all three stanzas. The
women earned a standing O at the end for their efforts. Barry, who had
lost to Amber Gideon at the Chicago Golden Gloves in an exhibition the
evening before, was
awarded the victory over Smalls.
In a Semi-Main event, two 147 pounders met again. 2003 Wisconsin Light
Welter Champ Krista Savage took on USA Boxing #5 Ranked Nasheba Thomas.
Savage forced most of the action during the fight with both girls fighting
a slower paced fight than may have been expected. Savage was awarded the
victory over Thomas.
In an undercard bout, a Duke Roufas trained Light Welterweight fighter,
Erin Riley took on Anna Keiser out of Marshfield, Wisconsin. Both were
evenly matched, but in her first fight of her young career, Keiser notched
her first victory over a game Riley.
One of the sponsor's of the night was WBAN.
