Martinez wins debut easily on all-women boxing card - From Herald Staff and Wire Reports
- 09/21/1997
Miami's Patricia Martinez, the USA national 106-pound amateur boxing champion, made her professional debut Saturday night a smashing success. However, being a self-professed ``workaholic,'' Martinez wasn't happy with the night's work.
``I was disappointed I wasn't able to get more rounds in,'' Martinez said. ``I was looking forward for some good rounds in the ring, but it wasn't to be.''
That's because Martinez overwhelmed Natasha Wilburn from the opening bell at Round One Boxing in Boca Raton. Repeatedly landing unimpeded left-right combinations to her outclassed opponent's face, Martinez's first professional action was stopped when Wilburn refused to leave her stool to begin the third round.
``This was a good start for me,'' said Martinez, the first winner in South Florida's first-ever all women's fight card. ``Hopefully, even better things will follow.''
As short as Martinez's bout was, it still appeared lengthy compared to the main event, where 145-pounder
Chevelle Hallback brutalized Bethany Payne for 45 seconds before the fight was stopped.
Other bouts: (170-pound class) Dywanda George defeated Sylvia Johnson by TKO at :39 of the third round; (156)
Lisa McFarland of Lake Worth TKOd Sherri Painter at :23 of the second round; (125)
Anne Koenig beat Thalmar Dallemond by unanimous decision; (170)
Diane Clark of Pompano Beach beat Leslie Shane at :41 of Round 2; (135)
Melissa Salamone of Miami beat Tawayna Broxton in a four-round unanimous decision.
