STORY
October 26, 2001 - Austin Texas
At the Frank Erwin Center, in Austin, Texas, there were two women’s
boxing matches that started the evening of boxing action. Lightweight Brenda
Bell-Drexel, 133, from San Marcos, won a six-round unanimous decision
over Austin's Snodene "Mean" Blakeney. According to WBAN’s
inside reporter, Drexel took the fight to Blakeney, and Blakeney fought
"Drexel’s" fight! Blakeney did not take advantage of her reach,
and fought on the inside most of the six rounds. There were some headbutts
by both fighters, but Drexel clearly won the fight. The second women’s
bout that was a flyweight six-rounder, featured Jay "Joltin"
Vega, from Austin, and Maribel "Little Thunder" Zurita,
who fights out of San Antonio. Vega won by a unanimous decision, and clearly
outpointed her opponent.
June 1,
2001 -
Sands Hotel and Casino,
Atlantic City, New Jersey
Isra Girgrah, 128, won a 10-round unanimous decision over Snodene
Blakeney, 130, for the vacant IWBF Junior lightweight title. In the
Atlantic City Press, reporter Guy Gargan wrote: "Female
boxer Isra Girgrah entered the ring Friday at the Sands Casino Hotel with
her entourage carrying her two championship belts. World heavyweight
champion Hasim Rahman, her friend and co-trainee at the Round 1 Gym in
Baltimore, Md., was carrying one of them. After all this fanfare, it
wasn’t an easy night for Girgrah, but she left the ring a little less than
an hour later wearing a third belt. Using ring generalship, Girgrah
came on to outpoint brawling Snodene Blakeney of Austin, Tex., over 10
rounds. She won the vacant Women’s International Boxing Federation
junior-lightweight championship. Girgrah, 128-pounds, improved to 18-3, with
eight knockouts. Blakeney, who weighed in at the junior-lightweight limit of
130 pounds, ignored her underdog role and flailed away with both hands as
the bout began. She never let up, but Girgrah found the range from the
fourth round on, and generally landed better punches. Judge John Reilly and
Luis Rivera both scored it 97-93 for Girgrah, and judge Alan Rubinstein had
it 97-94. The Press scored it 98-95 for Girgrah.
February 17, 2001-
Poland
Aga
Rylik won a 10-round
decision against Snodene Blakeney in her first WIBF Jr. Welterweight
defense. The final scoring was 99-90, 100-90, 100-89. According to
news sources, Rylik was more technical than Snodene. There was one knockdown
in the fight in which Snodene took an eight count. Snodene fought with
a lot of heart, and endurance and came in very good shape. It appeared
that Snodene had problems with Rylik being a southpaw, and that Snodene's
timing was not up to par. Overall it was a very clean fight without any
fouls being called. Both fighters showed respect for each other at the
press conference. It was a very good fight, and it was shown live on
Wizja Sport in Poland and some channels on the UPC Platform in Europe.
