Mia St. John vs. Linda Tenberg
Report by Sue TL FoxUTAH (May 13)
Today, at the "Hangar" State Line Casino in Wendover,
Utah, there was a four-round bout featuring Mia "The
Knockout" St. John, 33, 129.5, 21-0-0
(12KO) vs. Linda Tenberg, 28, 125.5, 5-3-0 (2KO). St.
John was dressed in pink; Tenberg in Black boxing gear.
Round 1
Both St. John and Tenberg went center ring, and began establishing their
jab. Midway through the first round, there was a wild exchange of
combinations, from both fighters. They
then again, re-established their jabs.Tenberg delivered
a clean right hand, but it did not seem to have much of
an impact. Tenberg raised her hands in victory to the
audience, and the crowd yelled and clapped as she went
to her corner. (I had this round even).
Round 2
Both fighters came out again, center ring and began throwing
combinations—sometimes at the same time, causing their arms to clashed
at times. At one point they stood in the center and went toe-to-toe,
continuing to exchange blows. St. John got off
a deadly crisp uppercut, that she threw from close to her body and
cleanly clipped Tenberg’s chin. The upper cut rocked Tenberg
slightly. After the bell rang, the ref went to break St. John and
Tenberg away from each other, when St. John threw a few more quick
blows. St. John then went back to her corner, her arms raised in a
victory.
Round
3
St. John began to pour it
on…but Tenberg would have none of that and she equally exchanged
blow for blow with St. John. Tenberg was throwing a lot of combinations,
but did not seem to be focusing on what her target was. St. John was also
barraging Tenberg with many combinations, but was almost missing Tenberg.
Although by now in the fight, St. John had established herself as the
harder puncher of the two, and throwing cleaner shots. The fight
continued to be very entertaining, and even though some of the
boxing was more of a slugfest, the boxing fans were definitely
getting their money’s worth. St. John knew she had been in a fight
as her hair was in a disarray after the third round.
Round
4
St. John came out like a windmill, overpowering Tenberg. Tenberg did
not have an answer to St. John’s relentless attack. Even though St. John
and Tenberg threw a lot of combinations, but were missing the intended
target. Both would not stop the pace of the fight. They were both a little
worn, but were giving every ounce of energy and heart that they had in
this last round. Tenberg got a clear right hand on St. Johns face,
but it did not seem to faze her.
DECISION:
Mia St. John won by a unanimous decision. 39-37, 39-37, and 40-36.
WBAN had one of the regulars that frequent the site attend the fight
in Wendover. This was his (JD) take on the fight:
"What can I say? I came, I saw, I reported. And what I saw did
surprise me a little. Mia clearly won the fight based on pure aggression
and punches thrown effectively. She does "windmill" on occasion,
but not as badly as I've seen her in the past. Tenberg seemed unprepared
to deal with the level of intensity that Mia brought to the fight.
Although, Tenberg did score some good shots and looks technically better
schooled most of the time. Now, this may irritate some of the Mia-haters,
but at least Mia commits to her punches. And her conditioning is good as
she was non-stop and simply overwhelmed Tenberg with a whirlwind attack. I
couldn't give Tenberg a single round, sorry. And I went in with a
decidedly anti-Mia mindset. Also, Mia's punches seemed more accurate than
before. Less looping. Since Tenberg came up in weight, that may explain
why Mia had no difficulty "walking through" her punches. They
just didn't have the sting that Mia's had. All in all, it was an
entertaining fight given the limitations of both fighters. Mia is actually
improving so I must in fairness give her that much. That's it from
ringside at Bendover, I mean Wendover, Nevada. And now your not-so
mild-mannered reporter will put his laptop aside and hit the blackjack
tables." |
