Ann Wolfe vs. Vienna Williams
Report by Sue TL Fox
May 15, 2001HONOLULU (May 16,
2001)
Last night, before a crowd of about 3000 fans, Ann Wolfe, 153
¼, of Austin, Texas won the IFBA Jr. Middleweight World
Championship, against a gritty and tough Vienna Williams, 150
¾, of Philadelphia, PA. on ESPN2. Judge Tamotsu Tomihara
scored the fight 100-90, Judge Herbert Minn scored the bout
99-92, and Judge Hubert Minn scored the bout 98-/92 all for
Wolfe.
Round 1
Wolfe and Williams, both
came out immediately throwing jabs, and feeling each other
out. Wolfe threw a barrage of punches and hit Williams with a
big right hand, and set Williams back. Williams had an artillery
of her own, and hit Wolfe with a big right hand, setting Wolfe
back onto the ropes.
Round 2
Both fighters came out, throwing jabs, but more
cautiously. Both threw many combinations, but not many connected.
Just as the bell rang to indicate the end of the round, Williams threw a
quick, powerful jab connecting to Wolfe’s chin.
Round
3
Wolfe came out more aggressive and
began to throw combinations, but was fighting too much on the outside.
Wolfe was standing a little too straight up, which could be very
detrimental with a power-puncher such as Williams. Williams began
slipping and moving in and out of Wolfe’s distance causing some
frustration for Wolfe.
Round
4
Williams again begins to loosen up with her footwork
that is not seen as much as it should be in women’s boxing. Wolfe threw
some good combinations but was actually slapping with her punches
slightly.
Round
5
At the start of the round, Williams came out like a
totally different fighter. She began to showboat inside the ring, using
slick footwork, prancing around Wolfe. The crowd began to roar and got
into what Williams was doing. Williams continued to taunt Wolfe.
Williams then began to make identical moves as Wolfe, moving her shoulders
from side to side, just as Wolfe was doing. Williams began smiling
laughing, and mimicking Wolfe. Williams got a good left hook to Wolfe.
But, Wolfe then began to punch back, and some hard exchanges ensued
between the two. It was the best round and most exciting round of the
fight up to this point.
Round
6
Williams did not stop the taunting and smirking at Wolfe, almost
laughing at times. It was quite entertaining, but actually there was not a
lot of punches thrown or landed in this round.
Round
7
Wolfe developed a mouse that turned into a cut under the eye.
Williams had some very good movements, and at one point, redirected
herself, darted in and shot a quick right hook to Wolfe's head.
Round
8, 9, 10
In these rounds both had some
good combination exchanges, but at times would fight too much on the
outside, and jabbed to far away. There were no knockdowns in this
fight.
Williams proved she is definitely
a boxer to be dealt with. She is truly a talent with a unique style that
differs from many other women boxers. Wolfe also has many talents as
a boxer, with a strong jab, and a looping right hand that comes out of no
where. Both boxers put on a very good fight, and it was another
great night of women's boxing that was televised this week.
A Few Words from Fox
ESPN2 is quickly becoming the leader of Sports television that support
women's boxing. It is unfortunate that HBO has taken a strong
stand to NOT SUPPORT women's boxing on their televised portion of their
shows. Their lame excuses do not cut it with WBAN, and
as far as WBAN is concerned, HBO is discriminating against women who have
chosen to box for their profession and livelihood....And are denying them
the right to make higher purses by being televised. |
