FIGHTER
Miami Herald - Diaz Rodriguez
Seamy
side of women's boxing Link
July 26, 2001 - North Charleston, South Carolina
At the Radisson and Gaillard Auditorium, in
front of 1,000 boxing fans, Melissa Salamone fought for the SECOND time with the same opponent,
made-for-padding-records Sophia Johnson. Salamone just can’t seem
to be able to stay away from easy marks as Johnson, who Salamone had JUST
stopped in the fifth round on April 28, 2001. Johnson owns two wins to
her "ailing record" that were with two questionable opponents.
WBAN does not know if this time around "Kemp Girl Fighter"
Salamone fought four or six rounds, because the only article on this
Tomato-Can-Land boxing fiasco had one line of text in the article. Salamone
won by a unanimous decision against Johnson this second time
around---surprise, surprise…….For a background on Salamone's
opponent, Sophia Johnson, an excerpt out of an article that
was published in January of 1999, from the Miami Herald described the
following: "Sophia Johnson has replaced Payne as
the favored fighter in Kemp's stable. A 147-pound rock of muscle, Johnson,
26, came to Kemp from jail on the recommendation of another former inmate, Sherri
Painter, jailed on a theft charge. Johnson (1-0) knocked out Painter
last month. Before that bout, Johnson had wandered in and out of trouble.
''I used to sell drugs,'' she says. ''I've been robbed three times and raped
three times.'' Sometimes Johnson runs from trouble using phony names. Among
the aliases she has given police: Sophia Grant and Anita Brown."
January
28, 2001, -The Moon in Tallahassee, Florida,
Sunshine Network
Sofia Johnson, 139, of
Atlanta, Georgia won a
four-round unanimous decision against Jodi Kombrinck,
133, of Tallahassee. According to news sources, Kombrinck was knocked
to her knees by a short right to the head, but battled on to finish the bout
bloody-nosed but on her feet. |
