"Hall of Shamer" Willicia Moorehead.
October 24, 2003 - Chicago, Illinois
Amber Gideon made her pro debut in Chicago last night and won a
four-round unanimous decision over Milwaukee's Willicia Moorehead.
Before a sellout crowd of 800 boxing fans at the Ramada Hotel and FOX SPORTS
NET cameras, Amber Gideon enjoyed the home field advantage with a cheering
section of her own. Amber's quick handspeed and in-your-face style was no
match for Moorehead. Give credit to Moorehead for coming out with a furious
exchange in the fourth stanza, but it wasn't enough to bridge the gap that
was created by Moorehead in the first three rounds. Ringside - Fight
report by Bob Marovitz
August 22,
2003 - McBride Hall,
Indiana
Kristy Rose Follmar, Indiana, KO’d Willicia Moorehead
of Wisconsin
in the second round. Follmar knocked Moorehead to the canvas twice
in the first round, before the fight was stopped 1:59 of the second
round. Follmar is now
8-1-0 (8KO).
March 14,
2003-Avalon Events Center, Cleveland,
Ohio
In front of a crowd of 900 boxing fans, Vonda Ward
won the bout after overmatched opponent Jeanine Tracy,
of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, quit one minute in the third round. Ward is
now 17-0-0 and Tracy dropped to 2-7. In a second's women's
match featherweight Kelli Cofer stopped Willicia
Moorehead in the second round after being knocked down three
times. Cofer improved her record to 10-0-1, and
Moorehead fell to 2-13. The matchmaker of this event
gets an "F" for putting together
these lame matchups.
February 7, 2003 - The Palace, in
Auburn Hills, Michigan
In front of 12,123 witnesses…ah, I mean boxing fans, Mary Jo
Sanders, daughter of former Detroit Lions star Charlie
Sanders, made her pro debut against well-established "tomato
can" Willicia Moorehead. According to the local Detroit News
and certainly no surprise to WBAN they reported that Sanders had an
"easy time of it in her pro debut, knocking out hapless Willicia
Moorehead (2-12) in the first round." The news sources went on to
say, "Moorehead, who struggled to throw simple punches, was down
twice before referee Frank Garza stopped the fight." Another sad
day in today’s sport when these inept matchmakers and people that
have their "own agendas" in the sport continue to put these mickey-mouse
matches together…In a second women’s match, Windsor Canadian
Kara Ro, stopped Julia Day in the fourth round, and had
been knocked down three times, and lost a point for excessive
holding. Ro remains undefeated at 2-0-0, and Day is now 3-3-0.

November
22, 2002 - Savannah, Georgia
At the Savannah Civic Center, Chevelle Hallback, IBA World
Champion, has had another inferior, inept boxing match with
now, Willicia Moorehead who fights out of Wisconsin.
Hallback KO'd Moorehead in the first round (big surprise?
not...) And WBAN will comment again, as it did with Hallback's
last MISMATCH against Vanessa Pine…BIG Disappointment with a boxer
as talented as Hallback, who has now had two mismatches in a
row. Moorehead is now 2-10.
October 26, 2001 - Cleveland, Ohio
Kelli Cofer, 125, TKO3 Willicia Moorehead, 135,
5'10" of Milwaukee. Moorehead was a last-minute opponent. In the
first round, both boxers felt each other out. In the second round, Cofer
knocked her down with some good solid hooks. In the third round, the fight
was stopped. Cofer told WBAN, " I
looked her(Moorehead) up on the internet and her record is weak but also it
is disputed if she is the same girl fighting each bout. Almost as if there
are different girls fighting under her name."
Cofer improved her record to 5-0-0 (4KO) and Moorehead dropped to 2-8.
ANDREA NELSON KO'S HER LAST-MINUTE
OPPONENT 1:39 OF THE FIRST ROUND...
Madison, WI (Dec. 15) Andrea
Nelson fought in a scheduled four-round bout against Willicia
Moorehead, who was a last minute replacement. Moorehead
did not put up much of a fight against the fast punching Nelson, in
which the fight ended 1:39 in the first round. ESPN2
commentators pulled "no punches" in making strong remarks
about the "less than thrilling" women's match of the
evening. They went on to describe the match as not a good
representation of women's boxing, said that Moorehead had no
technique, no preparation, and that she slapped with her
punches. The commentators also made comments with the fact
that Moorehead turned her back, and was hit in the back of the head
when the referee counted her out. Nelson came into the
fight undefeated, and now reigns a record of 7-0. Moorehead
was reported to have a record of 2-5, but WBAN could only locate a
few fights that were all losses. (Moorehead lost by a split
decision 11/02/00 against Yolanda Blackmer; Moorehead KO'd 09/10/00
against Jennifer Alcorn; Moorehead TKO'd 10/07/99 by Bridget
Benjamin).
Another report that came into WBAN
from Bill H., reported his read on the fight: "On ESPN2's Friday Night Fights last night (Friday, Dec. 15) Andrea Nelson,
6-0, of Dodgeville, Wisc. fought and the loser was women's boxing. Nelson's
opponent, Willicia Morehead, 1-5, of Milwaukee, went to 1-6 when Nelson KO'd
her about a minute and a half in the first. Sadly, women's boxing took a horrible licking on national television as
Morehead was hustled in at the last minute substituting for Layla McCarter
who was a no show suffering, it was reported, from the flu.
Moorehead is a sometime patsy on midwest boxing programs apparently
believing that a small payday is better than no payday and she accepts
beatings to pocket the money. Her boxing skills are exactly zero as she
pawed and slapped her way through about a minute and a half of the fight.
Nelson didn't look very good in winning but looks are deceptive when a
good boxer and a street brawler, which Morehead most assuredly is, fight.
The matchmakers deserve to be punished for foisting this farce on the
public. If ESPN2's programmers didn't like women's boxing before the have
every reason now to never air a women's fight again."
ESPN2
COMMENTATORS REVEAL THAT WILLICIA MOOREHEAD WAS NOT THE
"REAL" MOOREHEAD IN LAST WEEK'S FIGHT!
Tonight,
on ESPN2 "Friday Night Fights" During the matchup
between Marischa Sjauw and Liz Mueller, the
commentators had a very interesting comment about the women's
boxing match that was televised on December 15 between Andrea
Nelson and Willicia Moorehead. The commentator began talking
about the fiasco of last weeks match and calling it an
"Obvious Blowout Mismatch."
Apparently, after Russell Peltz who does a lot of the
matchmaking for ESPN, did some investigating about last weeks
fight, he discovered that Willicia Moorehead was not "Willicia
Moorehead." In fact, the "Real" Willicia was a
19 year old, not a 28 year old. Teddy
Atlas agreed with the other ESPN2 Commentator when he referred
to Moorehead as a "Ringer" and that it was important
to have stronger commissions, not weak ones, and that a
national commission would
be a good thing. So.... who was that opponent last
week?...and does a fight like that stay sanctioned when a
fighter was not who they said they were? Sue TL Fox |
