Liz Mueller, 132.5, won a six-round unanimous decision over 24-year-old
Connie
Bechtel, 137.5 of Lancaster, PA.
Judges Melvina Lathan and Frank Lombardi scored it 60-54 while
George Smith had it 60-53, giving Mueller a 10-8 sixth round. TheDay.com
said about thatMueller suffocated Bechtel for long stretches in each round,
staying inside the jab of her taller opponent as she worked to the body and
head with her typical relentless style, and that Bechtel knew what to
expect, but she never found an answer, growing increasingly exasperated as
the fight wore on. Bechtel told TheDay.com "I'm not used to
fighting girls that strong, real tucked in like that,” she said of
Mueller, who fought from a crouched position all night, neutralizing
Bechtel's four-inch height advantage by getting inside to relentlessly
attack the body. “She's a great fighter. She fights like a guy.” Mueller improved her record to
7-2 (2 KO), and Bechtel dropped to 0-4-2. (Theday.com reported her
record as 1-4-3. WBAN will research Bechtel's record)

Kathy Rivers (165) of
Woonsocket, Rhode Island defeated Evelyn Rodriguez
(164 1/2) of
Brooklyn, New York in a four round super-middleweight
decision. Rivers moves her record to 10-2 (3 KO's),
and Rodriguez fell to 0-2. Also on the card, Liz
Miller of Hartford, Connecticut defeated Kelly
Whaley of Cedar City, Utah, in a four-round
uanimous decision. Mueller remains undefeated with a
4-0 record. Whaley fell to 2-3. According to news
source Sports Writer, Bud Barker of the Providence
Journal he was quoted as reporting the fight, "In
a women's bout last night, Connecticut's Liz Mueller
came out flying in her four-round lightweight battle
and took a unanimous decision from Kelley Whaley.
Whaley had come from Cedar City, Utah, to take on the
unbeaten Mueller, a U.S. cross-country and New England
track champion while at Waterford (Conn.) High School.
Mueller, now 4-0, fought out of a charging crouch. She
belted Whaley with hard rights for the duration. But
Mueller couldn't put the tired but game Whaley away
unitl the sixth round. Mueller, 25, of Hartford,
eventually won on a 40-35 decision."
