December 27, 2001 - Irvine Marriott, Irvine, California
Rita Valentini won her pro debut when she stopped Kim Reed :27
in the second round. Fight report by WBAN's Inside report: Roy Englebrecht Promotions put on the final class act card of 2001 in Southern California. The
" Battle in the Ballroom" drew an almost sold out crowd. There were five fights on the card with the women as the third bout.
Kim Reed, 37 years old, with a record of 1-4 weighed in at 124 lbs. and Rita
Valentini, 31 weighed in at 122 1/2. Prior to the fight Rita expressed that she was ready and felt, "good, relaxed and anxious". She also explained that she was usually a bantamweight, as she weighed-in fully clothed. Her trainer, Jesse Mercado, said that he wanted to train this Canadian-born fighter, because ,"he saw her intensity".
A number of things were weighing on Ms. Reed's mind. Reed's trainer, Sean
Carrigan, was not present for this fight. Instead, Reed had Cassius Green (cutman) and Dr. George Del Junco in her corner. The commission also
had suspended Kim's boxing license prior to this fight for eight months, and this fight was to determine the future of her boxing career.
Valentini, in all black, was all business as she approached the ring. The crowd, upon hearing the records of the women, immediately favored
Valentini. Round 1, proved that the vehement look that showed on Rita's face was no show. As the bell rang, Valentini attacked Reed with a
barrage of straight punches to the head. Reed was knocked back several times, putting her head down, but did stay up. Valentini definitely threw punches that landed solidly and cleanly and
exhibited more than effective aggressiveness. She didn't have much opportunity to avoid blows, because there was never more than one or two punches at a time thrown by Reed.
Round 2 was much of the same, with Reed coming out with slow ineffective punches. Reed has a big heart, but could not stand up against the consistent punching of
Valentini. Twenty-seven seconds into round 2, after having 1 standing eight count, the referee stopped the match.
Reed's record drops to 1-5 and Valentini has her first professional win by way of knockout.
Valentini comes from the amateurs and has a 4-1 record.
