Fresh on the heels of a victory over Delia Gonzalez, rejuvenated flyweight
contender Yvonne Trevino took another step on the comeback trail with a
thrilling tko win over Suzanne Riccio-Major. In a bout that
featured action from start to finish, Trevino gained a 5th round TKO win
over Major in a bout that saw, to the crowd's delight, each fighter hit
the canvas.
The bout was contested at the junior bantamweight level. In the view of
the crowd, the stoppage was deemed 'premature' and the fans echoed their
sentiments with a thunderous chorus of boos.
Round one opened and Trevino immediately went to work as though she was
double-parked, sending Major down early with a solid overhand left.
Major
was up quickly and used her jab and footwork to escape further trouble.
Score it 10-8 Trevino.
Round two commenced and again Trevino carried the action to Major with
short right-left combinations, backing Suzanne to the ropes. Major fought
well off the ropes, working the body but Trevino again had the
edge, 10-9. Running tally: 20-17 Yvonne. In the third stanza, Major
shocked Trevino with a booming right
hand that sent Yvonne tumbling to the deck. Trevino recovered well in the
latter stages of the set but score it 10-8, Suzanne. Running count: 28-27

The fourth round saw Trevino score well as she continued to land her short
right-left combinations. Numerous exchanges had the crowd roaring
their approval as Major again fought well from the ropes, continuing solid
body work. Again, the edge to Trevino 10-9 with the running tally reading
38-36 Trevino. In set five, Trevino came out quickly, using her jab
well while Major boxed smartly, avoiding most of the damaging shots.
Yvonne continued to
press while Major was content to attack the midsection. Suddenly, Trevino
landed a big left hand that momentarily wobbled Major. As Trevino set
to launch her assault, the referee jumped in and called a halt to the
action. The audience booed lustily his decision to stop an
outstanding bout
somewhat prematurely. Yvonne tried to do a post-fight commentary of
the bout but the microphone was no match for the continued cat-calling of
the irate fans. The fight was well-fought by both girls, a
crowd-pleaser in which both gals had their moments. Had it
continued, Major would have probably needed
the knockout to win it and, while doubtful, she deserved the opportunity.
Promoter Tony "T" immediately promised the fans a rematch of the two
