There were two women's matches on the HBO card. In a Junior-welterweight
bout, Lucia Rijker, 138,
won an eight round unanimous decision over UK's Jane "Fleetwood Assassin" Couch,
140. According to news sources, Rijker had a tougher time than expected, but
that Rijker controlled most of the rounds. In the Laila Ali vs.
Valerie Mahfood bout. Ali, 168 lbs.,
stopped Mahfood, 168 lbs., 1:17 in the sixth round, after a barrage of
combinations. Mahfood did not go down but she appeared shaken.
Ali suffered a small cut near her right eye in the fifth round.
This was a rematch for the two. These fights were televised in Europe.
The eight-rounder of Ali-Mahfood, and the last three rounds of the Rijker-Couch
fight were televised.
