In the outdoor Amphitheatre, on an all-women's card, in "A Ring
of Their Own" boxing event, in the first fight of the night,
Shadina Pennybaker, had an outright war with
Daria Hill
of New Jersey, in six "tough" rounds of boxing. In what
could have been the best fight of the night (but as boxing fans
found out) all of the matches could have been classified as the best
fight of the night, Pennybaker won by a close unanimous decision. Both fighters not only displayed great skill, but very
good sportsmanship. Final judges scores 57-55, 56-55, 56-55. The second fight of the night was a six
rounder between Jeannine Garside, 130, of Windsor,
Canada and Rita Valentini, 125, of Hollywood, California.
The fight started out to be even, but it did not take long for
Garside to dominate the bout. Garside won by a fifth round
TKO, 1:25 seconds, Garside is a stellar example, why women
should try to learn their skills in the amateurs before turning pro.
She went to the body, throwing effective combinations, and as the
fight progressed she continued to put more pressure on Valentini.
In the third match, they had a special feature with
Elena "Baby Doll" Reid fighting a four-round exhibition against
Carina Moreno. Reid and Moreno were both warming up for
their world title bouts. Reid is fighting Regina Halmich in a
rematch on December 3, 2005, in Germany (WIBF belt), and Moreno will
be fighting Siriporn in Thailand (WBC belt). In a fourth
match, Laura "Lady Ram" Ramsey, 164, of Florida, fought
Sweden's Asa Sandell, 165. In the first round,
WBAN had Sandell ahead, as she was throwing crisp jabs, and had an
obvious height advantage. In the second round, Sandell began to have
a nose bleed, and had an accidental slip this round. In the sixth
round, Ramsey knocked Sandell to the canvas, with her taking an
eight count. Ramsey won the fight by a six-round split decision.
In the main event, Wendy Rodriguez, 105, won an eight-round unanimous
decision over Yvonne Caples, 105. The two mixed it up for eight
rounds, with Rodriguez out-pointing Caples. There were no
knockdowns in the bout. Arnie Rosenthal, and Ken Weiss, along
with matchmaker Wanda Bruce put on an excellent show, with great
matchups. Full

Bloodied, battered and disappointed, Elena Reid suffered her
first loss in several years.
Before more than 1,000 people at Harrah's Hotel and Casino, Reid was stopped
by technical knockout by New York's Alicia Ashley in a bantamweight bout
scheduled for eight. Referee Jay Nady stopped the fight because of a cut
over Reid's right eye at 1:04 in the seventh.
Though Reid was the favorite coming into the fight, Ashley was the bigger,
faster and more experienced fighter and showed it.
Using her longer reach and deftly moving side to side, Ashley popped Reid
with jabs and landed some stiff left hands. It was a left hand that caused a
cut over Reid's eye in the sixth round.
"I hurt her in the third round," said Ashley (11-5-1), who usually fights at
a heavier weight and has fought champions such as
Chevelle Hallback. "After
that, she didn't want to come in any more."
Reid tried to work inside but found herself walking into left hands. And
when she backed out, Ashley would catch her again with left hands.
"I wanted to show people I could box," said Ashley. "But after I hurt her I
didn't have to move."
The first two rounds Ashley moved quickly around the ring, changing
direction whenever Reid closed in. Both fought out of a left-handed stance.
"I don't think because we're both left-handed that it caused a problem,"
said Ashley. "It's just like two orthodox fighters fighting each other."
Ashley was correct. It was more her handspeed and reach that befuddled Reid
who could not figure out how to effectively attack the rapidly moving
Ashley.
Reid suffered her first loss since losing to Layla McCarter several years
ago. "I'm a little disappointed," said Reid (16-2-5). "I have to go back to
the gym and improve." Ashley felt her amateur experience proved the decisive
factor in winning the fight.
"I'm a boxer. I never go into a fight thinking I'm going to stop someone,"
said Ashley. "I'm a boxer. I know people don't like to see boxers, but
that's what I am." In a featherweight bout, Fontana's
Heather Percival was the underdog against
Michigan's Jennifer Salinas (5-1) who is tutored by famed trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. But she proved to be more skilled and won by unanimous
decision. "I landed the straighter shots," said Percival (6-1). "I
guess I have the better trainer."
Percival, who is trained by Larry Ramirez, moved side to side giving angles
to the hard rushing Salinas. The judges scored the fight 40-36 for Percival.
"This was a great win because she was supposed to be the better fighter,"
said Percival. "She was aggressive but it's not always the aggressive
fighter that wins. It's the fighter who connects the most."
From the first round, Percival found holes in Salinas defense. And when
Salinas closed in too fast, she was met with wicked right hands.
In the second round Salinas began to land more punches to the body, but so
did Percival. During the following rounds Percival seemed to have more
energy and began landing three-punch combinations. Occasionally, Salinas
would land a solid right hand, but it wasn't enough. In a junior middleweight bout, Texan
Akondaye Fountain (5-0) won by
technical knockout over Shelly Burton (6-2) of Montana.
Burton pressed the fight but kept getting caught with left and right
counters. It was a fight decided by Fountain's ability to slip and counter.
In the seventh round, Burton rushed Fountain with a fussilade of punches
that caught her off-guard. But when she tired, referee Robert Byrd stopped
it. The crowd booed.
A match between super middleweights ended in a six-round draw between
Asa Sandell (2-0-1) of Sweden and
Yolanda Swindell (3-2-1) of Texas.

Elena "Baby Doll" Reid,
117, stopped Lakeysha Williams,
120.5,
with a single body shot to continue her quest for a junior bantamweight
world title on Saturday.
In an all-women fight card, Reid, 23, showed a full house at the Silverton
Casino what women's boxing is all about with a convincing performance over a
bigger but not stronger opponent.
"This was Elena's best performance," said Chris Ben, who trains Reid.
Using quicker combinations and a tighter defense, the left-handed fighter
Reid out-punched and never stepped backward against Williams (8-7-3) who
often fights at featherweight.
It was the second time they fought. In their last meeting Reid won by
unanimous decision two years ago.
"This was a much easier fight this time," said Reid (16-1-5, 5 KOs), who
fights out of Las Vegas. "The first time we fought I was the one moving.
This time she was the one moving and it was much easier for me."
Firing lead left hands and quick three-punch combinations, Reid snapped
Williams head back repeatedly. Williams tried to use her jab to keep Reid
from landing but was walking into right hooks.
In the fifth, a single left hand to the solar plexus dropped Williams who
writhed in agony. The referee Richard Steele counted her out at 1:59 of the
fifth round.
Williams, who fights out of Philadelphia, said she was at a handicap for the
fight.
"I think they should have given us more time to get adjusted," William said
regarding her arrival to Las Vegas the day before the fight.
Reid was exhuberant with her knockout victory.
"I love boxing," Reid said with many fans driving from Arizona to see her
fight.
Though Reid fought for a very small purse, it was a sacrifice she made to
get back into the ring.
"All I want is a chance to fight for the world title," said Reid, who seeks
a match against Mariana Juarez or Regina Halmich. "All my training is paying
off."
If there is any question about Reid's ability to fight the best in the
world, the always happy Phoenix native proved she belongs among the elite
prizefighters in the world and is willing to face anyone from flyweight to
bantamweight.
"I've waited for a long time for a chance to fight for the world title" said
Reid who came within a judge's decision of winning a world title against
Germany's Halmich last summer.
And about her victory.
"I love throwing those body shots," she said.
As Reid signed autographs for her fans, her trainer Ben looked at her and
gave a quick assessment of her victory.
"That was her best performance," said Ben. "She's seeing all the shots
coming and she's not getting hit any more."
The only shots Reid wants to take are world title shots.
Last week, a Southern California promoter tried to make a fight between Reid
and Juarez, but the Mexican fighter's team decided against it.
"It's hard finding fighters in her weight class that want to fight her,"
said Ben. "She always has to fight girls that are bigger than her."
No matter, Reid found the right combination to stop her taller and heavier
opponent.
"All of the training I do is paying off, the fights are getting easier,"
Reid said. Other results: Shelly
Burton, 158, UD6 over Elizabeth Kerin,
162; Aasa Sandell, 168, UD4 over
Bose Ljoala, 172.5;
Daria
Hill, 139, TKO5 over Angie Poe,
136; and Jennifer Salinas, 120, by UD4 over
Sharon Gaines, 121.
There were about 1,000 at the event. Jessica Rakoczy was featured as the
ring announcer. (Report by David A. Avila)
