Misc Info:
April 23, 2005 -
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Jelena Mrdjenovich, 130, won by
1:50 seconds, KO1 over Shakura (Carla) Witherspoon,
128.
February 25, 2005 - Maywood, California
Despite a vast experience and weight disadvantage,
Mariana Juarez
tore through Philadelphia's Carla (Shakura) Witherspoon
in quick
fashion for a knockout victory.
Southern California fight fans got their first glimpse of Mexico's
Juarez in two years at Las Trancas banquet hall before a sold out crowd
on Friday. Juarez wasted little time in launching a calculated
attack that forced Witherspoon into a toe-to-toe battle. Witherspoon was
dropped with a barrage of body shots in the first round. She held on.
"I knew she had a lot of experience and had fought some very good
fighters," said Juarez (14-3-3
(8K0). "I wanted to box more but she
kept holding so I fought my way out of it." Witherspoon (11-40-1),
who had won her last fight by decision, opened up the fight with sharp
jabs and some movement. But Juarez's tight defense and pin-point
combinations made Witherspoon back up quickly. "Our plan all along
was to force the issue," said Ben Lira, who trains Juarez. "Carla has
too much experience to allow her to do what she wants." In the
second round, Juarez walked through Witherspoon's punches blocking and
slipping, then opened up with combinations to the head and body. A
flurry of punches to the body forced referee Cantu to stop the fight at
1:41 in the round. "I was careful with her because I didn't want
to get a head butt when she was holding," said Juarez, 25, who is
scheduled to defend her IFBA junior bantamweight in late March in China.
"I know I have to defend my title so i didn't want to get injured."
Most of the crowd were there to cheer the Mexico City fighter who now
lives and fights out of Southern California. "I was so happy to
fight in front of my fans," said Juarez. "It was a nice feeling." In
a second women's bout: Fontana's Heather Percival (5-1) is
much too good for any pro debuting professional as Bell's Amber
Alvarez discovered. Percival landed punches at will and forced
referee Jerry Cantu to stop the fight at 1:37 of the first round.
Percival fought at 123 pounds to Alvarez's 128.
"She was very tall," said Percival who may not have been hit with a
punch. "Larry Ramirez told me to throw uppercuts and left hooks so I
did." Percival almost didn't make the fight card. Numerous
opponents dropped out until Azteca Gym's Ricardo Mota suggested Alvarez.
"I was just happy to fight," said Percival who had several previous
matches evaporate in other fight cards. Trainer Larry Ramirez said
Percival has improved dramatically in the last few months.
"Sparring with Mariana Juarez really helps Heather," Ramirez said.
"Heather is really learning quickly." In an amateur
fight, Maywood's Sarah Garcia and Los Angeles-based
Lizette Medel showed excellent boxing skills in a rousing
three-round exhibition. Garcia displayed some heavy hands and Medel's
combinations were fluid and fast. (Report by David Avila)

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Junior lightweight Shakurah Witherspoon, 125, won a four-round

39-38 Witherspoon; Judge Vic Richmond 39-38 Serrano; Judge

won a unanimous decision over the over
hometown favorite Bermundian Teresa Perrozi, 169.

134, of Kennesaw,

featherweight world title fight. According to an insider at
the fight, Del Valle clearly dominated the fight, and that she
was received well with the people in the D.C. area. Other
results: In a junior middleweight bout,
Ann Marie
Saccurato and
Maria Lindberg, 151, fought to a four-round
draw; Super Middleweight Aasa Sandell TKO3

Lightweight Multi-world title holder Isra Girgrah, 131, 27-3-2, won
a six-round unanimous decision over Shakurah Witherspoon, 132 ½,
now 10-34-1 (3K0) in a scheduled six-rounder...Who would have guessed
that Girgrah would win this one?
August 21, 2003 - Radisson Astrodome
Hotel, Houston, Texas
WBAN had to "chuckle" just a tad bit on this latest result from the Radisson
Astrodome Hotel, in Houston, Texas. Not to cast any accusations as to why a
boxer like Shakura Witherspoon, 127, with having one win out of her last 18
fights, and donning a 9-33-1 record, would have been picked as an opponent
for undefeated 9-0-0 hometowner and crowd favorite Lanie Ellis, 130.5.
Witherspoon defeated Ellis with a six-round unanimous decision---not an easy
task with these odds stacked against Witherspoon coming into the fight.
Witherspoon delivered Ellis her first loss as a pro. Final judges scores
58-56, 58-56, 59-55. Oh...by the way,
Congratulations to Witherspoon for this impressive win!
November 21, 2002 - Days Inn, Allentown,
Pennsylvania
Lisa "Too Fierce" Foster won a four-round unanimous
decision over Shakurah Witherspoon.
September 22, 2002 - Table
Mountain Casino, Friant, California, Fox Sports Net Card
Shakura Witherspoon makes it to a even "30"----that is
thirty losses as a professional boxer.... Witherspoon fought a much less
experienced boxer, Lisa Lewis, who according to news sources
dominated the fight, when Shakura basically covered up and avoided Lewis
most of the fight. Lewis told the Fresno Bee, "I couldn't believe it,
I thought, why in the hell is she in the ring if all she is going to do is
cover up?' " Lewis won the fight with a unanimous decision bringing
her record to 4-6-0. Witherspoon dropped to 9-30-1.
June 4, 2002 - Savannah, Georgia
Chevelle Hallback,
now 8-3-1 (4KO), defeated last-minute replacement boxer Shakura
Witherspoon, now 9-27-1 in a six-rounder on ESPN2.
Hallback won by a decision, but there are no details at this time
about this fight other than Hallback won.
Editorial: Does Shakura Witherspoon have any
friends in her corner?
By Sue TL Fox -February 19, 2002
(FEB 19) Shakura
Witherspoon has lost 27 fights and won only nine. Of her last 12 has won
only one. Yet last week, like a lamb led to slaughter, she climbed
into the ring to face Lucia Rijker. Of the predictable result, one writer
said that Witherspoon was "destroyed." This was a matchup
more suitable for sadists than sports fans, And it is a perfect example of
a disturbing issue in our sport that few will acknowledge and even fewer
will address. In Witherspoon's case, it is obvious even to those who
are supposed to be looking out for her -- her manager, promoter and
trainer - have no concern for her safety. This is not the first time she
has been used as fodder for a top-class boxer. She has been pounded by
many of the women in the sport that are considered some of the best in the
world. You have to wonder if Witherspoon herself even cares about her
safety. Of course, she is one of many fighters who have been so
used. And that raises questions about the ethics of the matchmakers who
arrange such fights and the commissions that allow them. How can any of
these people continue to have such utter disregard for the welfare of the
Shakura Witherspoons of the boxing world by repeatedly allowing such
matches? It is unconscionable that so many people with control over
the sport accept this as common practice. One boxer the
"fighter," one boxer the "fightee." One boxer
gets the easy mark----the other is used as no more than a piece of meat.
This is not only dangerous for the overmatched fighter---it is bad for the
sport's image. Witherspoon has been suspended for 90 days.
WBAN believes that is a good. And WBAN hopes that some commission will
follow the example of what California did with Sue Chase after she had
accumulated a 24 loss record with only one win---they "retired"
her. Sue TL Fox 02/19/02
February 16, 2002 -Connecticut
Overmatched
Pennsylvania Shakurah
Witherspoon, who has a heart of a lion, but cannot seem to pull off many
wins...Was stopped in the fourth round 1:30 seconds by
Lucia Rijker.
Witherspoon now has 27 losses to her record - Rijker remains undefeated
15-0-0 (14KO). Witherspoon fell to 9-27-1 (4KO).
February 1, 2002 - Palace Indian Gaming
Center, Lemoore, California
Fresno's Jennifer Alcorn, 136, won a four-round unanimous decision
over Shakurah Witherspoon, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, 134.5. Final
scoring was 40-36 by all three judges. Alcorn remained undefeated
with a 12-0-0 (8KO) record, and Witherspoon fell to 9-26-1 (4KO).
According to news sources Alcorn came out very aggressively in the first
round, and had Witherspoon back-peddling. Witherspoon was able to
effectively defend herself and get some good combinations in the later
rounds.
November 15, 2001 Bakersfield, California
Jennifer Alcorn, 133, went to 10-0 won by an easy unanimous
decision over Shakurah Witherspoon, 128. All three judges scored the
fight 60-53. According to WBAN inside sources, Witherspoon went down
hard in the first round and got up and grabbed Jenifer and pulled her top
partially off. The top was reattached between rounds and the fight
continued. Witherspoon was in trouble again in the second round and
managed to pull the top down again. At that point, the top was
repaired in the corner and taped and the fight went the distance from there.
Shakura was warned several times for holding tactics but managed to survive
the fight with holding and movement, but did show courage being hurt several
times and refusing to quit.
September 29, 2001 - Martinsburg,
Virginia
Melissa Del Valle (Salamone) fought Shakurah Witherspoon for the FOURTH
time, and stopped her in the first round. Salamone is now 25-0-1 (10
KO), and Witherspoon slipped to 9-24-1 (3KO).
September 25, 2001, Reading, Pennsylvania
Shakurah Witherspoon of Williamsport, Pennsylvania won a four-round
una. decision against Connie Bechtel. Witherspoon
improved her record to 9-23-1 (3KO). Bechtel fell to
0-5-3.
July 3, 2001 Southern Star Amphitheatre,
Georgia
Corinne VanRyckDeGroot of Atlanta TKO2 Shakurah Witherspoon.
Witherspoon was knocked down twice before the fight was stopped.
Corinne improved her record to 7-0 (4KO). Witherspoon dropped to 8-22-1
(4KO).
February 23, 2001 Janesville, Wisconsin
Andrea Nelson won a four-rounder against
Shakurah Witherspoon of
Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The final scoring by all judges was
40-36. Nelson remains undefeated with 8-0, and Witherspoon fell to
8-19-1.
April 28, 2000, Foxwoods Resort Casino, Conn.
Liz Mueller
won by a unanimous decision in a four-round
lightweight bout against Shakurah Witherspoon.
Mueller has moved her record to 3-0 (2 KO, and
Witherspoon has dropped to 8-16-1. As reported in the
Hartford Courant by Terry Price He said the
following: Liz Mueller took a big step up Friday night and took a
big step forward. Fighting for the first time at
Foxwoods Resort Casino, Mueller, the state's only
female professional boxer, dominated Shakurah
Witherspoon to win a unanimous decision in a
four-round lightweight bout. Mueller was not
overly bothered by the big-time setting or
Witherspoon's experience. Mueller (3-0, two
knockouts) stayed on top of Witherspoon (8-16-1, four
knockouts) the entire fight. Witherspoon's
left-handedness presented a different look for
Mueller, but she didn't let it bother her. A former
national high school cross country champion, Mueller
corned Witherspoon, who is from Philadelphia, in every
round and opened up with digging shots to the body and
left hooks to the head. It was the first time
Mueller, who is from Waterford, has gone more than two
rounds in a professional fight. She won her first two
matches, including her debut in Hartford in January,
with second-round TKOs."
